Five hundred and twenty years
ago—on February 18, 1486 to be exact—the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna
descended to this earth as Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the Golden Avatar (Gauranga
Mahaprabhu). His descent was foretold in the Srimad Bhagavatam, the
Mahabharata and the Atharva Veda and he came in this unique form for two
reasons. First, Sri Chaitanya revealed the sublime nature of the highest love
between Krishna and his most intimate devotees and he himself (Mahaprabhuji)
continually relished the ecstasy of that love. And second, he popularized a
simple yet potent method of God realization: the chanting of the maha mantra,
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama,
Rama Rama Hare Hare.
